The pentagon has conducted a revision of the number of religions that will be recognised by the military. From 211 religions, it has reduced the number of recognised faith groups down to 31. Those who have seen the revised lists have suggested that it reflects a strong recognition of larger Christian denominations and other formalised religions such as Buddhist, whilst ignoring smaller minority faiths. This, in turn, means that those who do not fall into these recognised religious groups, although they have a faith, will not have their religious needs acknowledged and catered for in the military. Whilst this may streamline faith-based services in the military, the tendency of the state to increasingly only recognise the faith of those who belong to organised religion is a return to the dark ages. When the churches and formalised religions are considered the arbiters of truth and beliefs, it leads to persecution of those who may differ in their understanding and practices. When an individual is convinced that the Bible or their sacred text teaches a doctrine that is not upheld by a recognised religion, they can no longer be recognised as having a religion. Religion and faith are increasingly no longer matters of personal conviction but of membership in and adherence to the belief system of a state-recognised group.
